Grumpy Old People

Something today got me thinking about this, since our youngest often reminds my husband and myself that we’re pretty grumpy “old people”. He usually says this as i’m fussing at some dumb driver from inside my own car, who’s driving SLOW as molasses in the FAST lane; staying near enough to another slow car who IS in the slow lane as they should be, so that no one can pass – including me.

Today, someone referred to my husband as “grouchy” – which he can be … and another was commenting that, at this “holiday” time of the year, folks can be SO rude, thoughtless, and just downright uncaring about others. NO particular reason for their rudeness or hatefulness …. it’s just that, apparently, they CAN be that way.

Now there’s a difference between my ‘fussing’ at people, in my own car … and being deliberately rude and hateful to people because YOU want them to move out of your way even though there’s a whole parking lot of space to walk a few steps around the other person.

My husband is said to be “grumpy”. He’s really not and can actually be quite funny when he chooses to be. But mostly, he’s not a “people person”-kind of guy. He does quite nicely in almost every social situation but he just doesn’t feel comfortable when he’s not in his “comfort zone”. I believe most of us are also like that. He’s just not a “social butterfly” although when i was more of a “people person”, he said i was one. LOL

I know older people must seem pretty “grouchy” to the younger ones sometimes. And sometimes, we older people ARE grouchier than at any other time in our lives. We’ve lived a long time, around a lot of people doing and saying a LOT of STUPID things. Over the years, we’ve done our own stupid things – and learned from them. We DID learn from our own stupidity because we’re “still alive to this day”. (LOL a teasing hug to my granddaughter, Kilyn for a line she wrote in a report that still makes me laugh)

So were grouchy, grumpy people who have lived a lifetime, followed a routine of living that got us to where we are. We earned the right to be grouchy about things we don’t like like rudeness, thoughtlessness, loss of common sense and common decency, and no seeming respect for anyONE or anyTHING.

So if YOU’re unhappy with some older person YOU know that seems to be grouchy around you?? Take a look at WHY they might be grouchy to you and make some changes.

“Still alive to this day.”

I had a fantabulous day!! I rode out to see mi nietas as a surprise, at their school. I hadn’t ridden even 2 miles when an older woman, with her daughter and i believe there was a grandkid in the back seat, driving a nice new SUV …. just HAD to pull out in front of me AS SHE LOOKED AT ME – or, maybe she was looking through me. Of course i laid on the horn as i had to quickly apply the brake .. and she almost came to a full stop in front of me … as i rode around her, looking at her with the horn still blaring. AT the stop light, they pulled into the left turn lane as i was in the lane to go straight – side by side we were. LOL the daughter in the front passenger seat just stared straight ahead.

Got to Betty’s, the other mamaw’s house, ย but she wasn’t home.

Texted hubby to let him know where, what, and why before heading on to the school to meet up with Betty. On the side road, i knew i’d have to keep my eyes open and be ready for someone to suddenly pull out in front of me. I was passing a junk yard (of dead vehicles) and was going slower, looking … and then i saw it. A thick hedge runs along the road to block the view of the junk yard … and as i started along the length of it, i saw some kind of vehicle approaching the hedge, from inside the property. I slowed even more and after noting no vehicles coming from the opposite direction, was prepared to move over into the oncoming lane to go around the …. wrecker with a long bed .. it pulled halfway out into my lane BUT SAW ME AND STOPPED. As i passed him on the center line, i nodded my gratitude as i rode by the 2 guys in the cab of the wrecker. ๐Ÿ˜€

Lol I got there early and wasn’t sure where to park; there was lines of parents already waiting but no buses – yet.

Then a bus rolled in and i backed my bike to the edge of the pavement so the bus wouldn’t hit it when it left.
Betty arrived and we walked in to get the girls but Kinley met us out front. So after talking with a few people, including Betty’s sister Mary, we went in. Kilyn had cheer practice … but before it started, we spent some time together in the gym. โค

My pitiful attempt at a selfie with Betty. While she and i talked, Kinley ran laps around the gym. LOL When i was her age, i loved to run – just to run. My mom would say that my long hair, flowing out behind me as i ran, reminded her of a horse’s mane … and i remember wanting to BE a horse, somehow. Unfortunately, i was never able to morph myself into a horse. lol

While she ran laps, Kilyn pulled out the report she did on her “Family tree” for me to read. LOL Betty kept saying i was the main focus of Kilyn’s report because ย i’m the “cool grandma”. Well Kilyn did mention a lot of other relatives in her report but as one of the many people, i did have the largest amount of information. LOL I loved reading it and the quote of this post is from Kilyn’s report after telling about how i’d been bit by a rattlesnake, “She’s still alive to this day.” Bahahahaha! โค

The girls climbed around on the bleachers, finding someone’s backpack, a jacket, and a hard-case for glasses, and i think Peanut said she saw a toy also.

Before we left the gym so Kilyn could go to cheer practice, we took some fabulous photos together

Lela (short for Abuela) doesn’t take good ‘selfies’. LOL

So while Kilyn was at cheer practice, we went to the two front playgrounds. At the first one, Peanut wanted to push me on a swing – and she did a great job! When she wanted to swing, as i was slowing the swing to get off, it reminded me of when i was about 11 years old; when we were recently back to the States and living in a huge, 3-story with a basement, pre-Civil war house in the St Louis, Missouri area. The house had a semi-circular driveway in front and along the driveway was a huge, old tree that was at least as tall as the old house (and probably taller). From the tree on one of the lower limbs (that was still a good 20 feet up, if not higher) was a really thick rope with a knot tied at the bottom. Not a thin rope; one that now seems like it was at least 3 inches thick! like this one:

The rope hung down pretty close to the tree and i would sit on the knot and push off the tree, trying to swing and wrap the rope around the tree more and more with each swing. Sometimes i’d miss the ‘landing’ with my feet and end up hitting the tree with my back … but with each time i’d miss, it made me want to “stick the landing” with my feet even more. ๐Ÿ˜€ After a while, i was really good with wrapping the rope around the tree at least 3-4 times and twirling around on the rope as i unwound it from the trunk of the tree. i LOVED that ‘swing’!
The little tree that was beside the huge one, also along the driveway, was the one i’d climbed up into and sat on a dead branch / limb. The limb broke and i fell about 12 feet into the gravel driveway below. I landed on the right side of my head, effectively knocking me out for about 3 days.
In the side yard of the old house, there was another little tree that had another little swing on it. It wasn’t often that i used the little swing that looked like this because it just wasn’t as much fun. LOL

Just beyond that little swing was a jungle gym. Mind you, the house belonged to the Baptist church across the street. We were just temporary guests. ๐Ÿ˜€ But the place was a blast for me! The jungle gym was either dome-shaped like this one

or it was like this one

but now, i can’t be sure which style it was. LOL I’ve had dreams of the jungle gym since then and in the dreams, it’s like this second one. While Betty and i talked, i also remember a tetherball setup i had fun with also. I know the school in Cali had tetherball setups but the swings got more use.

ANYway …. i got to push Peanut but she was pretty good at making her ownself swing! ๐Ÿ˜€
from there, we went to the 2nd playground that the younger kids use. Some kind of bouncy-thing you stand on, swings, a covered area with tic, tac, toe game (where you drop red and yellow cylinders down into) … and a couple of other things for kids to climb and play on that i just don’t know what they’re called. LOL

So after a while, Peanut’s really wanting to “go home”; her routine of going home to get something to drink an eat while Sissy is at cheer practice is out of sorts …. so we decide to go on to the house to wait so she can relax with something to eat and drink. She also says she wants to play “doggie” with me which involves her crawling around on the floor, barking, and eating food from a bowl on the floor – or drinking water from a bowl on the floor. LOL Betty says Peanut and Sissy only want to play that when i’m around. ??
While Betty went to get Kilyn, Peanut and i went to the back yard and she showed me how she does a forward flip (not the same as a somersault that’s done along the surface) on the trampoline! She does it great and i believe she said even Sissy doesn’t know how to do it. lol

When Betty and Kilyn got back, we all went around to the back yard. Kilyn wanted to shoot hoops like her daddy used to do all the time – with a basketball that really glows spectacularly in the dark!! Peanut thought she wanted to shoot hoops with her basketball but then decided she’s rather bounce around on the trampoline some more. LOL Betty and i talked about how to get the poison ivy / oak down off the back of the house without getting all itchy!

and then hubby called and wanted to know when i was going to be headed home. It was getting close to 6pm and dusk would be following soon … so since my headlight isn’t good, i didn’t want to push my luck, what with folks wanting to pull out on me. So eventually i headed home; the sun still out but the air was a bit cooler than earlier. And sure enough, not too far down the road, another vehicle didn’t even slow down as it approached the main road … pulling on out in front of me, causing me to have to slow up quick enough. As i was “up their bumper”, i shook my head at them … and they then sped up and went on down the road. mind you, i wasn’t putt-putting along when they pulled out in front of me but after they took off, they were going a good 5 – 10 miles faster than 65mph.

T’was a wonderful day with the granddaughters and their other Mamaw, Betty. ๐Ÿ˜€

the boring side

LOL so my big achievement of the day … well, i guess there were actually two. i can’t count waking up late as one of those accomplishments although with the help of my usual pot of coffee, i was ‘functioning’ a little faster than usual. Kinda.

So once i was up and awake, i fed the outside cats and gave White Socks her 1 1/2 units of Lantus (slow-acting insulin) and then i went to feed and water a neighbor’s cat. LOL As i walked over, i could see him (he’s a black, very fluffy cat who reminds me of my beloved Hooters) up on the back hillside …. laying flat and low in the grass, watching me approach. As i got a bit closer, i turned a bit sideways and kinda crouched down a bit, quietly telling him i could see him there … and laughing about a black cat laying in green grass, thinking he’s invisible. ๐Ÿ˜€
So as i got even closer, i whistled at him and called him … and down the hill he raced … slowing abruptly as he got within 10 feet or so, to appear indifferent as he almost pranced towards me. LOL I reached down to try and pet him but he was focused on being fed and beat me to the edge of the porch. THEN he was willing to be petted. As soon as the food was in his plate, he was eating. ๐Ÿ˜€ Fresh water in the other ย … and as i headed back home, i picked up a lot of sticks and twigs that had fallen from my neighbor’s tree. I knew it had rained but apparently there was some wind also.

So then i fed and watered Cooper before showering. Once clean and dressed, i sat on the front porch with the last of the coffee and over a cigarette, pondered what i should get started doing outside: mow the grass along the main road where it’s getting weedy, pull weeds in the front walkway area, the front flower beds, weed the side flower bed off the porch … and then i remembered i had planned to use the riding mower with the wagon attached, to get the HUGE pile of weeds that i’d pulled in another neighbor’s yard about 2 months ago. LOL She’s been waiting to have mulch put down and i’d mentioned taking the weeds to our burn-spot at least a month ago. So, i got the key and went to it. Three trips back and forth to get it all and didn’t drop a thing through all the zig-zagging through our yard to get to the burn-spot in the garden. i’ll have to take a photo of the large pile in the burn-spot so the immensity of the pile of weeds can be appreciated. LOL ! Just know, it’s “bigly”! ๐Ÿ˜‰ hahahahaha

Then i went to pulling weeds in the front flower bed. i got a lot pulled before moving over to the extra ‘driveway’ of gravel that has a big pile of about 6-7 tons still waiting for me to finish around the back deck and along the side of the house by the garden where i want to make another ‘patio’ or something with it …. if i don’t use the 6-7 tons of gravel as a cover over thick plastic in the front flower bed to keep the weeds down. LOL Anyway, weeds were starting to grow into the graveled part of the secondary driveway so i pulled a lot of those … and pulled some from the asphalt driveway … before also pulling some along the front of the side garden by the front porch. Filled the wheelbarrow full!

In the meanwhile of all that, the phone would ring – both hubby calling and telemarketing/scam calls from numbers that i don’t recognize. Hubby called before coming home to say he’d talked to Tony, our oldest, and was going to go to Knoxville with him to look around “Rural King”, a new store like Tractor Supply (hubby and i’d looked around in it on Sunday when we rode our motorcycles down there). So as he went to pick up Tony, he stopped by Subway to bring me a chicken-teriyaki sub. I was going to microwave a frozen meal. lol

Yahoo … my exciting day, in detail, no less! LOL If the weather’s warmer tomorrow, i might go for a ride to see the granddaughters when they get out of school OR!! Maybe i’ll show up AT the school as they get out. ๐Ÿ˜€ i’ve been wanting to do that for a while. lol

dang it! it’s going on 1am so i guess it’s time to head to bed so’z i don’t get up late again.

Betty: Lmao
ME: if i don’t tell them, one of their uncles will
or their dad
Betty: Not really you could write it on the computer saved to a flash drive
Lol im sure they dont know the whole truth..wink
ME: hey!! true too – and it would be a LOT faster to type it out than to hand-write it …. but then again, a hand-written journal is more special these days. LOL it’s called the ‘secret’ way to get a message out since no one writes anymore and kids won’t be practicing writing like you and i did … so they won’t be able to read cursive writing
LOL ๐Ÿ˜€
LMAO!!! well … not about a lot of things … but the ones that are ‘safe’ to talk about, yes. they do
Betty: Lol..true however kilyn is teaching herself cursive writing
ME: awww!! You meatn hey really are not being taught it in school now??
*you mean they
Betty: No
ME: That confuses me
oh no!! that’s really not a good thing
like not teaching math skills and getting to use a calculator instead
Betty: No it isnt yes and how they teach multiplications by songs off of you tube
that’s horrible!
Betty: Yes it is
ME: being in the band class or the church’s choir was SUCH fun!!
Betty: Kilyn is in 4th grade the school only has 2 teachers each class has 32 kids only 25 computers
ME: only 2 teachers in the whole school??
and 32 kids per class is a lot … and they’re short a few computers
Betty: 2 for 4th grade they teach 4 classes each they told us that they cant teach all like they should so the kids arent being taught well
ME: ๐Ÿ˜ž that’s not good
Betty: They dont have enough lockers they had to buy containers for 7 kids its awful
ME: wow
what are the lockers for?
Betty: Back packs books coats
ME: i thought they packed all that in their backpacks and took the backbacks with them from class to class. lol it’s what i did when i was their age – actually no. we didn’t have back packs in Colombia
it was in junior high with back packs
in colombia, we carried everything
Betty: No they have to leave books for next class to use
ME: ๐Ÿ˜ฎ what??? what do they use for homework then?
Betty: Online books and work sheets they try not to give home work
ME: work sheets is extra cost for all the printing … online books that not everyone can access for lack of internet / cost.
Betty: I know its sad
ME: it’s crazy!!
Betty: Yes we all are upset about this mary my sister came back to valley view because we had 3 kindergarten teachers they all 3 had 28 kids she makes 4 now Kinleys class has 22 now
ME: that’s a LOT of little kids in ONE class still
Betty: Yes
ME: i remember trying to teach spanish to kindergarteners when Ki and Dakota were in elementary school. It wasn’t easy and there were maybe a dozen kids in that one class
Betty: Kilyn made her 1st 70 on a paper and it was in science and she loves science and her teacher said it was her fault cause she didnt have enough time to teach so she dropped it off her books
ME: oh for crying out loud!! how are kids supposed to learn when they’re not even being taught!
Betty: Ms.amanda is having a tough time also with kinleys class
ME: kinley’s teacher?
Betty: We as a community are trying to change it
ME: good grief!!
how? if the teacher doesn’t have enough time?
Betty: Kindergarten class having 22 ms.amanda is her teacher sorry so much
ME: that’s better than 28, to be sure
Betty: Trying to get more 4th grade teachers hired
ME: good deal!
Betty: It can be a mad house there…changing subjects now
Betty: Have you heard about the rumors of the clowns going to the schools
ME: yes!! someone in Middlesboro was arrested for being dressed like a clown and hiding in the woods when the police were looking for him
heard someone called in something in Claiborne county
Betty: 2 in claiborne county. Yes
ME: i haven’t heard about the 2nd one yet
copy cats
Betty: They are being seen around everywhere suppost to be from south Carolina trying to lure kids off for sex trafficing
ME: i heard something about it started as sexual predators but imho, kids have copy catted it and done their own stupid thing
Betty: Its crazy
ME: it is … and then the shooting today … and the young girl not wanting to go back to the school for being afraid and not able to trust anyone
Betty: I havent heard where?
ME: south carolina
SC shootings: Three wounded at school, man dead at home
Two children and a teacher were shot by a gunman at an elementary school playground in Townville, South Carolina, an official with Anderson County Emergency Management told reporters Wednesday afternoon.
Betty: Oh wow
ME: yeah. went to the school to shoot people after killing his father
Betty: Oh man…i wish i had to never let the girls go back
ME: i know … ๐Ÿ˜ž
lol my computer is freezing up
Betty: Lol there goes the theory of using it to write your book.
ME: it happens a lot lately. frustrates me to no end … and then it’ll work for a little while before it starts up again
Betty: Well im going to say good night but ive enjoyed talking to you again
ME: LOL i’ve enjoyed talking with you again!! Richard keeps asking if i’ve heard from you. we’ll try to stp by soon!!! Have a good night. gonna head that way myself
Betty: They look at every motorcycle they see to see if it is you guys tell him hi and we all love him and you come anytime we would love to see you
ME: ๐Ÿ˜€ will do!! Thank you!!
Betty: Have a great night
ME: you too!!
Betty: ย Goodnight

The Beginning

in talking with my son’s daughters’ other mamaw, she suggested i start a journal or write a book about my life. lol to me, my life is ‘normal’. to others, it seems interesting and to some, it seems ‘awesome’.

So okay, a little bit about me: born in Texas although birth parents lived in New Mexico. I’ve never lived in Texas (that i’m aware of) but we lived in Albuquerque before moving to Costa Rica for a year, to learn spanish. My (adoptive) parents were Baptist missionaries and we were eventually headed to Cali, Colombia (in south america). I missed the 60s in the USA but, perhaps that was a ‘good thing’. lol
so for the 70s, we had returned to the States and it was a VERY strange place to me. Actually, i thought Colombia was home and we’d moved to a foreign country. Grocery stores instead of out-door markets (like flea markets here) and schools curriculum was at least a year behind my school in Cali: Colegio Bolivar. Needless to say, it was a rocky start to my teenage years … which officially began in the Washington, D.C. area. :O oh yeah

gahh .. LOL i’m bored with myself already. SO … i made a lotta left turns outta Albuquerque and am now living in “upper” east Tennessee. I have four sons i love and am so very proud of; married to a wonderful husband of 33 years (+/-); with five cats at the moment and one good ol’ Boxer dog, Cooper.

welcome ๐Ÿ˜€ please feel free to comment / give feedback but PLEASE remember to keep it as respectful as possible. It’s not that i don’t sometimes cuss and fuss … but i try to remember where i am and what my surroundings are. I want my granddaughters to be able to read this and not have to wade through “other” language. LOL it’ll be fun enough for them when i comment in spanish from time to time.
